Marine Certified Fire Extinguishers

Marine certified fire extinguishers are portable appliances approved for UK-flagged vessels under the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Regulations (MER). They carry the UK Mark of Conformity — the Red Ensign — not the EU MED Wheel Mark. HSE Store’s Marine Range is British-made Jactone kit, also Kitemark certified to BS EN3 with UKCA and CE. This range is for commercial ships, workboats, fishing vessels, yachts, offshore installations and any craft that must put MER-marked fire protection on board. A land-only EN3 extinguisher is not enough where the MCA and the ship’s fire plan require marine equipment approval. Match media to the compartment — powder in plant and on deck, CO2 on switchboards, foam or water in stores, mist in accommodation, wet chemical on the fryer — and keep water-based units out of frost. What is a marine certified fire extinguisher?

It is a portable extinguisher that has been conformity-assessed as marine equipment for ships registered in the United Kingdom. Since the UK left the EU MED system, new equipment for UK-flagged vessels must meet the Marine Equipment Regulations (MER) and bear the Red Ensign UK Mark of Conformity. The EU MED Wheel Mark is a different scheme for EU-flagged ships. The two marks are not interchangeable.

Every Marine Range unit on this page is still a BS EN3 extinguisher. MER is the extra marine layer: approved body assessment, the Red Ensign mark, and suitability for the vessel’s fire-protection plan under MCA requirements (see current Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Regulations and MSN 1874).

What is it used for?

  • Fire points required on UK-flagged commercial vessels, workboats and fishing craft
  • Yachts and pleasure vessels that must carry approved marine equipment
  • Offshore installations and UK-registered craft wherever they sit
  • Compartments specified in the ship’s fire plan: machinery, accommodation, stores, galley, electrical spaces

The job is the same as ashore — put the right agent on the right fire — with the added requirement that the cylinder itself is MER-approved.

Who is it for?

Ship owners and managers, skippers, yacht captains, marine engineers, boat yards, offshore operators, and safety officers writing or auditing a vessel fire plan. If the craft is UK-flagged and the equipment is “marine equipment” in the regulations, land-only stock is the wrong specification.

What problem does it solve?

Surveyors and the MCA will not accept an unmarked office extinguisher as the approved appliance on a UK ship. Buying MER-marked cylinders in every media you need means the fire plan, the certificate and the bracket on the bulkhead all line up. It also stops a yard fitting MED-only product where the flag state now requires the Red Ensign.

Technical points that matter at sea

  • Mark: Red Ensign (MER). Look for the approved-body number and year of manufacture on the mark.
  • Also: BS EN3 Kitemark, UKCA, CE. LPCB on listed models.
  • Temperature: powder and CO2 for cold decks and open boats (−20 °C class). Water-based agents freeze — cabinet or heated space.
  • CO2 2 kg: frost-free horn. 5 kg Marine is the higher 70B unit.
  • Wet chemical: hose vs lance — lance for a vat from 1 m.
  • Mist vs wet chemical in a galley: mist is 25F/40F; wet chemical is 75F. Put wet chemical on the fryer.
  • Lithium-ion: not covered by this marine media set. Specify a dedicated lithium / AVD extinguisher if batteries are carried.

Service still follows BS 5306-3 and the vessel’s planned maintenance. After discharge, refill or replace with the same MER-marked type.

Frequently asked questions

What is MER, and why not MED?
MER is the UK Marine Equipment Regulations scheme. The conformity mark is the Red Ensign. MED is the EU Wheel Mark scheme. For equipment going onto UK-flagged vessels, specify MER. The two approvals are not interchangeable.

Does MER replace BS EN3?
No. These units are still Kitemark certified to BS EN3. MER is the extra marine equipment approval required for the flag.

Which extinguisher goes where on a boat?
Powder for mixed plant and deck. CO2 for electrics. Foam or water for stores and accommodation Class A/B. Mist where you want low residue and a modest F rating. Wet chemical 6L on the galley fryer. Follow the ship’s fire plan, not a single “marine” cylinder for every space.

Can I use a normal workplace extinguisher on a UK yacht?
Only if the fire plan and the applicable merchant-shipping rules allow non-marine equipment in that space. Where marine equipment is required, use a Red Ensign / MER unit from this range.

Will water-based marine extinguishers freeze on deck?
Yes if the temperature drops below +5 °C. Use powder or CO2 in unheated positions, or keep water, foam, mist and wet chemical in a protected locker.

Do I need wet chemical if I already have water mist in the galley?
If there is a fryer, yes. Marine mist is 25F or 40F. Marine wet chemical is 75F and saponifies the oil. Mist is not a full substitute on a cook line.
