Question
Technical Answer
What does COSHH stand for and why do I need a cabinet? COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. You need a specialised cabinet to safely contain corrosive, toxic, or irritant substances, ensuring compliance with UK health and safety laws.
What is a sump and what capacity should it have? A sump is a leak-proof base designed to catch spills. UK regulations require the sump to hold 110% of the largest container or 10% of the total volume stored, whichever is greater.
What do the different cabinet colours mean? Yellow: Flammables
White: Acids and Alkalis
Red: Flammables or Chemicals
Green: Pesticides & Agrochemicals
Grey: General Hazardous
Can I store flammables and acids in the same cabinet? NO. You must segregate incompatible substances. Storing flammables with corrosive acids can lead to dangerous chemical reactions or compromise the cabinet’s integrity.
How much flammable liquid can I store? DSEAR regulations recommend a maximum of 50 litres for highly flammable liquids (flashpoint < 23°C) and up to 250 litres for other flammable liquids within a workroom.
Are these COSHH cabinets fire-rated? Our QMP Steel units are Reaction to Fire EN 13501-1 certified and have a performance of A2, s2, d0.
Do pesticide cabinets require ventilation? Yes. Our pesticide cabinets feature louvred doors to allow for natural ventilation, preventing the dangerous build-up of vapours and fumes.
Can COSHH cabinets be used outdoors? Steel cabinets are for indoor use. For outdoors, we recommend our Hazardous Bins or Chests. We can also provide quotes for galvanised cabinets.
Should the cabinet be bolted to the floor? Highly Recommended. Floor-bolting tall cabinets prevents tipping, especially when heavy liquid containers are stored on upper shelves.
Are the shelves adjustable? Yes. Shelves can be moved in 25mm increments to accommodate various container heights while maintaining structural safety.
Manufacturing & Delivery All HSE Store COSHH cabinets are British-made and delivered fully assembled to ensure they meet safety integrity standards from day one.
Regulations (DSEAR) Our cabinets help you meet DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations) requirements for fire-resistant, secure storage.
